The Randomness: The Best First Films

The Online Film Critics Society started voting on their latest Top 100 poll: the 100 Best First Films. That is, the one hundred best directorial feature-length debuts, but that doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well.

Citizen Kane

OFCS members rank their top 25 picks; a weighted ballot system is being used to count the votes, with the results scheduled to be announced on October 4.

In the interest of fun (or, at least, pretending I’m actually getting around to adding new content to this site), here’s how I voted. These ballots are never an exact science – a balancing act of which movies I think truly are better than others, which ones are lifelong favorites that get sentimental support, and which ones I’m in the mood to love this hour. Don’t take this list as a sign of my written-in-stone picks, but instead as the titles that struck my fancy this evening.

Of course, anyone not voting for “Kane” at the top is just plain nuts.

1. “Citizen Kane”
2. “The Maltese Falcon”
3. “Airplane!”
4. “Marty”
5. “12 Angry Men”
6. “My Favorite Year”
7. “The Great Muppet Caper”
8. “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”
9. “Love Actually”
10. “That Thing You Do!”
11. “Toy Story”
12. “Blood Simple”
13. “The Iron Giant”
14. “Night of the Living Dead”
15. “This Is Spinal Tap”
16. “Head”
17. “Duel”
