It’s peculiar subject matter for a holiday cartoon, but then, how can we consider peace on earth without considering the alternative? Created in the early days of the Second World War, the 1939 MGM classic Peace on Earth reminds viewers of the horrors of which mankind is capable, going so far as to suggest true peace may not be possible until there are no men left at all. It’s both haunting and hauntingly beautiful.
P.S.: Peace on Earth was remade in 1955 as Good Will to Men, updated with sixteen years’ worth of new developments in death (and, interestingly, an even heavier emphasis on religion). Festive!
