Few things invoke such deep nostalgia for me quite like multiplex policy trailers. You know, those bits that run before the trailers, reminding you to visit the concession stand and requesting politely that you shut the hell up. Theater chains change these every few years, and it’s fun to revisit these clips decades later, awash in memories of moviegoing. If nothing else, the cheesy music and dated graphics are usually worth a giggle.
One of the more peculiar policy trailers from days gone by is the one National Amusements ran in late 1995. It remains one of my favorites because it’s so darn odd, thanks to the use of characters from the Nickelodeon cartoon Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. The clip makes no effort to explain these characters, leaving audiences unfamiliar with basic cable animation lost in a wilderness of demented absurdity. (To be fair, the thing about the “lobby art gallery” probably confused them even more.)
Bonus! All four seasons of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters are available to stream online at both Netflix and Amazon. If you just want a peek before diving into the complete series, Nick.com has posted a single episode online, available free.
